SUNDAY Concerts take place at the Granada Church in Coral Gables.

Mateusz Krzyżowski

Winner of the XII International Paderewski Piano Competition

and semi-finalist at the 2021 International Chopin Competition

Mateusz Krzyżowski is a young Polish pianist who won the first prize at the XII International Paderewski Piano Competition in Bydgoszcz in 2022. He also received the award for the best performance of WA Mozart's piano concerto. He was a semi-finalist at the 2021 International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Mateusz began his education in his hometown of Tychy in the Music School Complex of Feliks Rybicki in the class of Bożena Furmańska, and he continued in the classes of Lubow Nawrocka and Sebastian Nawrocki. Currently, he is a student at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in the class of Joanna Ławrynowicz-Just. He has worked with such ensembles as the Lublin Philharmonic, Sinfonia Juventus, Aukso Chamber Orchestra, and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, among many others.

ALL CHOPIN PROGRAM

Saturday, April 13/Sunday, April 14

South Florida’s best piano students take the stage to perform music by Frédéric Chopin at the annual Young Local Pianists Concert. The young pianists are recommended by their teachers and audition before a panel of professionals to obtain a coveted spot in the recital program. 

The selected piano students - all under 18 years of age - from Broward/Palm Beach Counties will perform on Saturday at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Abdo New River Room, and students from Miami-Dade County will perform at the Granada Church in Coral Gables.

Gold prize winner at the 2022 San Francisco International Music Competition.

Saturday, March 16/Sunday, March 17

Named as one of “Canada’s Top 30 Under 30 Classical Musicians” of 2022 by the National Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC), Canadian-American pianist Victoria Wong first made her orchestral debut at the age of five and has since performed on tour with orchestras, including the Hong Kong Symphonia, Canadian Sinfonietta, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, and the Millersville University Symphony Orchestra. She graduated with her Master of Music from the Juilliard School of Music, and in 2021, she participated in the prestigious XVIII International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Among her various awards, Victoria is the First Prize winner of the 2020 Lancaster International Piano Competition, as well as prizes at the International Fringe Award, EPTA International Piano Competition, San Francisco International Music Competition, Mozarteum Festival Competition, Carles and Sofia International Piano Competition, and the Canadian Music Competition. She also won a top prize at the Canadian Chopin Competition. Victoria is a many-faceted artist who enjoys watercolor painting, photography, and composing in her spare time.

Viet Trung Nguyen

Prize winner at the National Chopin Competition in Warsaw

Saturday, February 10/Sunday, February 11

Viet Trung Nguyen is a Polish/Vietnamese prize-winning pianist. He graduated from the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz under Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń. He is currently continuing his Doctor of Musical Arts studies under Kevin Kenner at Frost School of Music in Miami. His awards include fifth prize at the National Fryderyk Chopin Competition in Warsaw, the grand prix at the Vietnam International Chamber Music Competition, third prize at the Karlovac International Piano Competition in Croatia, and the grand prix and first prize at the All-Poland CEA Auditions. In 2021 he took part in the XVIII International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw.

Sarah Tuan

Young American pianist

Saturday, January 13/Sunday, January 14

Sarah Tuan is an accomplished performer and has played in many venues in the U.S., Germany, Poland, Italy and Denmark. She has appeared on NPR's "From the Top" and on Philadelphia’s WRTI 90.1. Sarah received scholarships to the 2016 International Chopin Piano Festival in Poland where she performed at the "World Piano Talents" concert. The same year, she was also selected to perform at the Amalfi Coast Music Festival "Rising Stars" concert in Italy. In 2018, Sarah was one of eight young pianists chosen internationally to study with Andrea Bonatta at the Piano Academy Eppan and performed in Italy. She was among 23 young pianists from around the world chosen for the 2019 Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition. Sarah also participated in the XVIII Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw in 2021. Her other accolades include first prize in 2018 Philadelphia International Piano Competition with the best solo and concerto awards, after which she was invited to give solo concerts in New Jersey and Philadelphia in the summer of 2019; first prize and the best Paganini Etude Award in Los Angeles International Liszt Competition; first prize in Virginia Waring International Piano Competition; first prize the San Jose International Piano Competition along with the Most Promising Young Talent Award.

William Ge

16-year-old Finalist at the 2023 MTNA National Senior Piano Competition

Sunday, December 3/Monday, December 4

William Ge, 16, won second place and the special Chopin Prize at the 2023 MTNA National Senior Piano Competition. He is a student at the Phillips Academy in Andover and the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. He currently studies piano with Ya-Fei Chuang and John Perry. He will study with Jonathan Bass starting September 2023. After winning the Albert M. Greenfield Concerto Competition in 2019, William debuted with the Philadelphia Orchestra in October 2022. The Philadelphia Inquirer described his rendition of Mozart’s Concerto No. 23 as “notably fluid while gilding the music with spots of interpretive individualization.” William is a third-year recipient of the Chopin Foundation’s Chopin Scholarship Program and one of 28 Caroline D. Bradley Scholars in the class of 2025 in the U.S.

Lewis Warren, Jr.

Winner of the 2023 MTNA Young Artist Competition

Lewis Warren, Jr. is an award-winning pianist, arranger, composer, and improviser based in Dallas, Texas. His musical versatility and powerful ability to connect with audiences have been hallmarks of his career. Lewis recorded albums and performed in televised broadcasts since the age of 8 and recently won the 2023 MTNA Young Artist Piano Competition. He has also performed with several orchestras, including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Jaap Van Zweden, the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Session Symphony Orchestra. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from the New England Conservatory of Music under Victor Rosenbaum and his Masters’ Degree from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music under Awadagin Pratt. He is currently pursuing his Performer’s Diploma at Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts under Dr. Carol Leone. The program will feature Chopin, Scarlatti, and Warren’s own compositions.
